Racism against North Eastern Indians during COVID-19

The reason people across the globe love India is because of its religious and biological diversity. Here are some facts, from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, India is home to 9 major recognized religions and the people here speak more than 22 different languages. This cannot be seen in any country out there, this and many more different factors make India whole as a country and we all are proud of our country.

We together as people of India have survived and come across so many problems in past years. We have been fighting wars against rape, equal respect for men and women, homosexual marriages, and many more. When times are hard, and actions are needed we unite and stand together and fight the battles for our people. The opponent at this moment is the pandemic known as COVID-19 and one cannot deny that it is the toughest of them all. But this time I have seen that we are not properly fighting this fight as one country. We all know that the origin of this coronavirus is China and it has spread from China all around the globe. In the North-Eastern part of our country there live people whose facial features are somewhat similar to those of the people of China but these people are also as much of an Indian as we all are, there is no denying that. A huge majority of these people have migrated from their hometowns to huge cities like Mumbai, Delhi, etc. to find employment so that they can take care of their loved ones in their village because there are no employment resources in their region. I’ve been hearing news all around the news channels that these people just because they look somewhat like the people of China they have been harassed and bullied for being the reason for this coronavirus spread, which is down to the last breath very inhuman and has no moral. Is this the right way to treat them? Ooh! wait I should rephrase is it right to treat any individual like that even if he/she was from China?  Our real enemy our real fight is against this coronavirus and not amongst us and guess what the virus has won until this moment. Most of the harassed people kept quiet and didn’t fight back but some did and I’m grateful that they did, as a result, this major problem became highlighted, and as it is highlighted it can be addressed and awareness can be spread.
Racism is a crime against humanity whether it be against color, caste, sex or any other reason. Until our country does not come across these small internal issues amongst us, unfortunately, India cannot be called a great nation, no matter how many satellites we send into space or how many engineers we have in Nasa.
